I have a pet. What do I need to know?

The city has a “Leash Law” for dogs.  This means your dog is not allowed to run loose, but must be confined within a fenced enclosure or tethered.   You are required to purchase a Kenton County Dog License.  These can be obtained at the Animal Control Shelter located on Mary Laidley Drive which is off KY 17 (3L Highway) across from Pioneer Park.  The cost is $5.00 if micro-chipped and spayed or neutered, $9.00 if micro-chipped and not spayed or neutered, $9.00 if not micro-chipped and spayed or neutered and $15.00 if not micro-chipped and not spayed or neutered.

Ordinance 90.02 –  No person who is the owner of any animal shall permit it to run at large in the public road, highway, street, lane or alley, or upon enclosed land, or permit it to go on any private yard, lot, or enclosure without the consent of the owner of the yard, lot, or enclosure.  The owner of an animal who permits it to run at large in violation of this section is liable for all damages caused by such animal upon the premises of another.

We also have a “pooper-scooper” law which applies to both cats and dogs.

Ordinance 90.23No person shall allow a dog or cat under his control to be upon public property or upon the property of another, absent the consent of the owner or occupant of the property, without some device for the removal and containment of such dog’s or cat’s excrement; nor shall any person fail to remove any excrement deposited by any dog or cat under his control on public property or private property of another absent the consent of the owner or occupant of said property.
This section shall not apply to guide dogs under the control of a blind person.

How many animals can I have in my household?

We limit the number of domestic animals a residence can have to four (4) cats and/or dogs.  This does not include puppies or kittens under six (6) weeks old.

Ordinance  90.07 - No person shall have more than four domestic dogs and/or cats in his possession, either on such property or in a house, unless such person is operating a professional pet boarding business and such property is zoned for such business.  This limitation shall not apply to puppies and kittens under six weeks of age who were born to a dog or cat being kept on the property.
